Dermis & Skins Flashcards
Epidermis
outer later of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
- forms waterproof surface barrier
Dermis
lower, support, later of areolar and sense irregular CT
- contain nerves, blood vessel, etc
Hypodermis
layer of adipose tissue that bind skin to deeper tissues
- insulate and cushion the body
Stratum Corneum
outer later of dead, keratinized cells
Stratum Lucidum
thin, clear later of dead cells found in thick skin only
Stratum Granulosum
3-5 layers of flat cells producing keratohyalin granules
Stratum Spinosum
thick later of flat, spiny cells where keratinization starts
Stratum Basale
deepest later of actively dividing
Eccrine Sweat Glands
Produce sweat for evaporative cooling
Apocrine Sweat Gland
produce thick, oily secretion in armpit adn groin
Sebaceous Glands
produce oily secretion and are associated with hair follicles
- protect and waterproof skin
- Antimicrobial properties
Ceruminous Glands
produce earwaax to kill bacteria and trap debris
- found in external audotory canal
Mammary Gland
found in breast and produce milk to feed infants
Meissner Corpuscles
collection of nerve ending which detect light pressure
- more common is smooth, hairless skin like fingertips
Pacinian Corpuscles
detect high frequency vibration
-more sensitve than Meissner Corpuscles
Melanin
pigment produced by melanocyes
- protect against UV radiation
- based on genetic and sun exposure
Hair
filament of keratinized cells
- divided into bulb, root, and shaft
- one of the fastest growing tissues
hair follicle
tube of epidermal cells that support hair
Arrector Pili Muscle
smooth muscle that cause hair to stand up
Keratinocytes
squamous cells that produce keratin to waterproof skin
Melanocytes
produce melanin
-located in Stratum Basale
Tactile Cells
detect light touch
-located in stratum Basale
Langerhans Cells
phagocytize bacteria and present antigen to immune cells
Paillary Layer
upper layer of areolar tissue and blood vessel
-Nutrient delivery& support
Reticular Layer
thick, lower layer of dense irregular CT
-strenght & elasticity
