What are the most likely causative agents with respect to erythema multiforme?
A
- HSV infection is most common etiology
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae has also been implicated
- HSV labialis (and, less commonly, HSV genitalis), is implicated in 60-70% of episodes of EM and are believed to trigger nearly all episodes of recurrent EM
- Frequently in association with sun exposure
- Drug related EM is less common (<10% of patients)
May be associated with NSAIDs, acetaminophen, sulfonamides, antibiotics
