What are the most likely causative agents with respect to erythema multiforme?

A
  • HSV infection is most common etiology
  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae has also been implicated
  • HSV labialis (and, less commonly, HSV genitalis), is implicated in 60-70% of episodes of EM and are believed to trigger nearly all episodes of recurrent EM
  • Frequently in association with sun exposure
  • Drug related EM is less common (<10% of patients)
    May be associated with NSAIDs, acetaminophen, sulfonamides, antibiotics
