Where are candida skin infections most likely to appear?
Where skin rubs on skin (such as between skin folds) and where heat and moisture lead to maceration and inflammation
What are the classic signs and symptoms of candidal skin infections?
Red, itchy, sore rash
What is the treatment for candidal skin infections?
Topical anti-fungal such as clotrimazole
What is pediculosis?
An infestation of the hairy parts of the body or clothing with the eggs, larvae or adults of lice
What is pityriasis versicolor?
A common superficial fungal infection of the stratum corneum (outer layer of the epidermis).
What causes pityriasis versicolor?
A change to the state of dimorphic yeasts of the genus Malassezia
What are the classic signs and symptoms of pityriasis versicolor?
- Hypo- or hyperpigmented coalescing scaly macules on the trunk and upper arms
- Lack of pain or pruritus
- Yellow fluorescence under Wood lamp investigation (+ve in third of cases)
What are the key risk factors for pityriasis versicolor?
- Adolescent and young adult
- High ambient temperature and humidity
- Greasy skin
- Hyperhidrosis
- Participation in athletics
- Systemic corticosteroid/immunosuppressant use
What is the first line treatment for pityriasis versicolor?
Pyrithione zinc, topical
What organism causes ringworm?
Dermophytes, a fungus
What is onychomycosis?
Dermophyte fungal nail disease, also known as tinea unguium
What is a tinea infection?
Another word for ringworm
What is tinea manuum?
Dermophyte fungal infection of the hands
What is tinea corporis?
Dermophyte fungal infection of the body
What is the first-line treatment for tinea capitus, barbae and manuum?
Systemic antifungal therapy e.g. griseofulvin or terbinafine
