Proliferation of fibroblasts and dermal dendritic histiocyte cells
Triggered by trauma
RF: HIV | SLE | female | adults
Symptoms and signs of dermatofibroma
Skin lesion:
Firm
Raised
<1cm
Variable coloration, often brown/red-brown
Dimple/centra depression when squeezes or ping (Dimple sign)
Asymptomatic or mild tenderness upon pressure
Slow growth
Arms and legs
Management for dermatofibromas
Observation: Many dermatofibromas are asymptomatic and require no treatment unless they become bothersome or cosmetically undesirable
Surgical Excision: If necessary for cosmetic or symptomatic reasons, surgical removal of the lesion is a viable option. This is often performed by a dermatologist or dermatologic surgeon
Cryotherapy: Freezing the dermatofibroma with liquid nitrogen is another option for removal
Laser Therapy: Some dermatofibromas may be treated with laser therapy to minimize scarring
