Depth Of Field Flashcards
What is depth of field?
Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.
It refers to how blurry or sharp the area is around your subject.
What is the main setting that is used to control depth of field?
The main setting for depth of field is controlled by the lens aperture.
The smaller the aperture (the bigger the bottom number), the greater the depth of field.
For example f/16 will give you a more extensive depth of field than f/4
Why does aperture affect depth of field?
A larger aperture allow more light to be recorded so the depth of field is less
A smaller aperture allows less light to be recorded and the depth of field is greater.
What is ‘infinity’’ in photography?
Short answer: when almost everything in the frame is in focus.
Long answer: infinity focus is a camera setting that allows a lens to focus on a distance far enough away that incoming rays of light are functionally parallel and reach the camera sensor as points. This minimizes the circle of confusion and reduces blur, producing an effect where the entire frame is largely in focus.
What is the rule of depth of field?
The rule of depth of field is that the smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field. This means that more of the image will be in focus. For example, f/16 will give you a more extensive depth of field than f/4.
What gives you more depth of field? f/16 or f/4
f/16
The bigger the number the smaller the hole. The smaller the hole, the less light. The less light the greater the depth of field.
