For what groups of people is mental illnessmore prevalent?
younger people
people with less education, people with less income , people who lived in more deprived areas, Māori and Pacific people have a higher prevalence of mental illness and serious disorder.
What are some symptoms of depression?
depressed mood, tearfullness, emptiness, negative thoughts, agitation or feeling slowed, significant wieght changes, sleep alterations, fatigue, poor concentration, social withdrawl, loss of interest, sense of helplessness, guilt, recurrant thoughts of death.
What does SIGECAPS stand for ?
Sleep ( insomnia) Interest ( diminished) Guilt Energy ( low, fatigue) Concentratin ( reduced) Apetite( increased or decreased) Psyhomotor ( agitation) Suicidal ideas
What is Dysthymia?
depressed mood for most of the day for more days than not and has been that way for at least 2 years
What are some causes of depression?
Biology - genetic risk/vulnerability, neuro chemicals ( Seratonin- regulates sleep, mood and appetite, Dopamine, Norepinepherine)
Psychology: pessimistic lifestyle, catastrophic thinking, learned helplessness
Environmental: stressful life events - loss, trauma, abuse
What is the difference between Bipolar Type 1 and Bipolar Type 2?
BPD1- 1 or more manic or mixed episodes ( usually with major depressive disorder)
BPD2 - 1 or more major depressive episodes and at least one hypoanic episode
What is Bipolar Disorder?
It is a recurrent mood disorder featuring one or more episodes of mania, or mixed episodes of mania and depression usually onset occurs between ages 15-30.
