Diagnosis of depression
Must be at least 5 symptoms including sadness or loss of interest in normal activities
Behavioural characteristics
- change in appetite
- change in sleep pattern (hyposomnia and insomnia)
- self harm
Emotional characteristics
- lowered mood
- anger
Cognitive characteristics
- negative thoughts- self worth
- poor concentration
Absolutist
Someone thinks it’s the end of the world when something small goes wrong
Ellis ABC model
- he believed depression was from an irrational thought process
- A-activating agent-negative experience that triggers the belief
-B-beliefs
I-can’t-stand-it-itis- the belief something is a major disaster when it doesn’t go to plan
Utopianism- the belief life is always meant to be fair
Musturbation- the belief we must always succeed
C-consequences-emotional and behavioural consequences of the beliefs
Becks negative triad
- faulty information processing-things are blown out to proportion
- negative self-schemas- interpret all information in negative way
1) negative views on the world
2) negative views about the future
3) negative views about oneself
