what is the scale that is used to measure depression?
-Hamilton depression rating
more than 24=severe depression
18-24=-6 moderate
7-17=mild

what are the levels of depression?
-transient, mild, moderate and severe
transient depression
-it doesnt last long and has symptoms of sadness, some crying, feeling tired
mild depression
-this is associated with grieving
-so patient will denial of feelings, hopelessness, withdrawal, self blame, anorexia or overeating
moderte depression
-this is called dysthymia, which means it could last for at least 2 years
-symptoms: powerlessness, psychomotor retardation, slowed speech, obsessive thoughts, low energy , low libido
severe depression
-intensification of moderate depression
-symptoms: flat affect, apathy, complete standstill behavior, or rapid movement, no personal hygiene, delusional thinking, urinary retention, impotence,
phases of individual therapy
-phase 1: client is assessed to determine extent of illness
-phase 2: helping client with maladaptive grief reactiosn
-phase 3: therapeutic alliance is terminated
Electroconvulsive therapy
-done for patients who are actively suicidal, severe depression, pyschomotor retardation, or those who antidepressant bagels
-side effects: temporary memory loss, deficits in attention, problem solvin
what medications are used when doing ect?
-pre treatment: atropine sulfate (robin) IM 30 min prior
-anesthesia: propofol, etomidate, succinylcholine chloride (muscle relaxant)
