what is depression?
● a common mood affective disorder
● involves a prolonged and fundamental disturbance of mood and emotion
● in order to be suffering from clinical depression - person should have experienced 5 of the following symptoms and a persistent low mood over at least 2 weeks
what are behavioural symptoms of depression?
● disruption to sleep (hypersonic or insomnia)
● reduced activity levels (e.g. can not get out of bed)
● aggression and self harm (in some cases)
● disruption to eating behaviour (appetite/weight may increases/decrease)
what are cognitive symptoms of depression?
● absolutist thinking (see an unfortunate event as a disaster)
● attention to negative (focus on negative aspects of current situation)
● poor concentration (unable to stick to a task / make decisions)
what are emotional symptoms of depressions?
● lowered self-esteem (may like themselves less)
● lowered mood (may describe self as ‘worthless’)
● anger (leads to aggression / self-harming behaviours)
