What is depression
A mood disorder which is characterised by persistent and intense feelings of low mood
What are the two types of depression and what is the name for the diagnosis manual?
Unipolar depression and Bipolar disorder, the DSM-5
What is unipolar depression?
Someone suffering with depression
What is bipolar disorder?
Someone experiencing periods of depression and periods of mania
What is major depressive disorder?
Severe but often short term types of depression
What is persistent depressive disorder?
Long term/ recurring depression, including sustained major depression
What are the six behavioural characteristics for depression?
-isolation
-lack of energy, in some cases a person could experience psychomotor agitation (inability to relax, pacing a room)
-Sleeping too much/ too little
-eating too much/ too little
-self-medicating
-aggression and self harm
What is sleeping too much called?
Hypersomnia
What is sleeping too little called?
Insomnia
What are the four emotional characteristics of depression?
-persistent feelings of sadness, low mood - lasting for several weeks or months
-not experiencing joy or happiness
- increased feelings of anger - quick to lose temper and getting angry more often/quicker
-low self esteem ( self esteem isn’t an emotion but more is a cognitive)
What are the four cognitive characteristics of depression?
-Negative thoughts about themselves, the world and the future- linking to Beck’s negative triad
-attention issues and dwelling
-memory issues
-poor concentration, ppl with depression report poor concentration which is linked to the attention issues formed by cognitive characteristics
