what is the general mechanism of action for antidepressants
increase synaptic levels of norepinephrine and serotonin
what adverse effect is highly likely when taking MAOIs
hypertensive crisis
how does a hypertensive crisis occur
tyramine is rendered ineffective so if an individual consumes a high amount of tyramine it competes with norepinephrine and displaces it. this leads to high quantities of norepinephrine. this leads to vasoconstriction leading to acute hypertension and high HR leading to an adrenergic crisis (extreme tachycardia and hypertension) leading to possible death
