States that depression = caused by depletion in monoamines in CNS
e.g Serotonin (5-HT) + Noradrenaline (NA)

- Sleep (increased / decreased)
- Concentration (low)
- Anhedonia
- Worthlessness / guilt
- Depressed mood
- Energy (low aka Fatigue)
- Appetite (low / high)
- Low self confidence / esteem

Appearance // Behaviour = Unkempt + Poor hygiene // Closed posture + Poor eye contact
Speech = Monotone + Long pauses
Emotion = Objectively + Subjectively low mood
Perceptions = 2nd Person Aud Hallucination (you are useless)
Thoughts = Worthlessness + Guilt + Self harm + Suicidal
Insight = Recognises der unwell (unless severe pychotic depression)
Cognition = Reduced Concentration + Recall
What Questionnaires help to assess the severity of Depression? (2 things)
- PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire 9)
- HADS (Hospital Anxiety + Depression Scale)
How does the PHQ-9 work to grade depression?
