Depositional landforms (beach) Flashcards
Beach
A depositional landform where material of varying tide has been deposited, formed by constructive waves
Inputs
Erosion, weathering, rivers
Store
Beach
Outputs
Destructive waves
Flows
Longshore drift, tides, wave refraction, traction, saltation, suspension, solution
Accretion
More input than output
Excavation
More output than input
Swash-aligned
Waves parallel to shore, low energy, often crescent shaped between two headlands
Drift-aligned
Waves at an angle to shore, graded sediment, longshore drift, often spits
Storm beach
Ridge from largest waves throwing big boulders above normal high tide
Berm
Series of ridges built by constructive waves (less in Winter) as high tide lower
Cusps
Semi-circular depressions formed when waves break directly onto beach, strong swash and backwash
Ripples
Marks on sand from wave action and tidal currents
Runnels
Water filled troughs the water moves through and ridges
Ridge
Raised sediment area
Rip channel
Water channel causing a breached ridge
Offshore bar
Raised sediment area below low tide
