dependency theory
- opposite to modernisation theory
- started in the 1970s (mining strikes , radical feminism)
- influenced by socialist ideology, protest movements, marxist ideology, radical theories.
what does dependency theory focus on?
it focuses on development from the perspective of poor countries
whereas modernisation is all about capitalist intrests
what did Frank 1969 introduce?
he introduced the term ‘underdevelopment’
what did frank highlight in this theory?
he highlighted exploitation.
he said that it was in the interests of the rich capitalist countries to keep some countries poor.
why did frank believe the capitalist countries tried to keep some countries poor?
it meant people in those countries could work for them a lot cheaper as they have low currency so dont want as much money - lots of profit.
what did frank say about the capitalist countries?
he said that the rich capitalist countries deliberately prevented and discouraged the development of some nations
what do capitalist companies do to create more profits.
capitalist companies build facilities in different countries where their currency low so they can produce via cheap labour - increased their profit
what does ‘outsourcing ‘mean?
sending labour abroad to make it cheaper
what happens if countries are prevented from developing ?
- it means capitalist countries can extract materials and labour value form poor countries while also selling them technology and expertise
- this is UNDERDEVELOPMENT

center canter (richest capital countries e.g usa uk) … they do not make things for other countries
what does pc stand for ?
periphery center e.g canada
what does cp stand for
center of periphery
what does pp stand for
periphery of the periphery
what do pc, cp and pp all do ?
they all work for the richer countries
