Dentoalveolar Flashcards
What is the definition of an impacted tooth?
Tooth that has ceased to erupt before emerging into its functional location or fails to erupt in an expected timeframe
What is the etiology of an impacted tooth?
-Crowding
-Malpositioned 2nd molar
-Trauma
-Prior surgery in area (loss of eruptive force)
-Thick bone or dense ST
-Pathology (cysts, tumors)
What are the most likely impacted teeth?
Mand 3rds
Max 3rds
Max canine
Mand Premolar
Mand canine
Max premolar
Max Central
Max lateral
Max 2nd molar
What is etiology of impacted maxillary canines?
-Due to crowding from adjacent teeth and tortuous route to eruption (starts high in maxilla with crown oriented anterior and towards midline)
How is position of maxillary canine determined?
-Clinical Exam: Palpate bulge
-Panorex: Horizontal=palatal (tooth looks big and out of focus)
Vertical=Labial
-SLOB: Move PA same way=lingual. move PA and opposite=buccal
What is the open technique for canine exposure?
Apically repositioned flap.
-Best for labial impacted teeth
-Do not remove bone beyond CEJ
-Etch, bond, bracket/chain
-Flap sutured apically to allow attached tissue to erupt with crown of tooth
What is the closed technique for canine exposure?
Full thickness flap
-Best for palatal impacted teeth
-Reflect flap
-Do not remove bone beyond CEJ. Can remove alveolar bone for path
-Etch, bond, bracket/chain
-Suture flap over tooth
