Dentine and Pulp Flashcards
What are properties of dentine
Forms bulk of tooth
Harder than bone and cementum but softer than enamel
Permeable (contains tubules)
Yellowish in colour (ivory)
What is the content of dentine
Hydroxyapatite - 70% weight (50% volume) Water - 10% weight (20% volume) Organic matter - 20% weight (30% volume)
Where do dentinal tubules run
From the amelodentinal junction to the inner pulp
What cells produce dentine
Odontoblasts
What do dental tubules contain
Odontoblast processes
Unmyelinated nerve terminals (sensory)
Dendritic cells (immune system)
Dentinal fluid of extra cellular fluid from pulp
Where is outer and inner dentine found
Outer dentine is closer to the amelodentinal junction
Inner dentine is closer to the pulp
What is dental pulp
Connective tissue and the core of the tooth
What cells are found in the pulp
Odontoblasts, fibroblasts and defence cells
What are the extracellular components of pulp
Fibres - collagen, oxytalan
Matrix - proteoglycans, chondroitin SO4 and dermatan SO4
What nerves are found in pulp
Sensory - autonomic (sympathetic)
What are functions of dental pulp
Nutrition Dentine growth Dentine repair Defence - immune cells - lymphatics Neural - control of dentinogenesis
What is predentine
An organised matrix that hasn’t been mineralised yet
Does pulp contain blood vessels
Yes
Does pulp contain lymphatics
Yes
