Dental Tissues Flashcards
What are the dental tissues ?
- teeth
- periodontal ligament
- bone
- oral mucous membranes
- tongue
- salivary glands
- lymphoid tissue
- temporo mandibular joint
What is the periodontal ligament ?
It is fibrous strong tissue which holds the teeth in the bone
What is enamel ?
It is the hardest substance in the body
It is 97% mineral calcium phosphate
It is made by epithelium
What is dentine ?
It is harder than bone but not as hard as enamel
It is made by odontoblasts
What are odontoblasts ?
They are cells that line the pulp cavity
What is found in the pulp cavity ?
Loose connective tissue :
- undifferentiated connective tissue cells
- fibroblasts
- fairly stiff extracellular matrix
- lymphocytes, macrophages and plasma cells
It is lined by odontoblasts
Contains arterioles and venues which supply the pulp cells and odontoblasts
What are osteoclasts ?
Cells which dissolve the root of deciduous teeth
Where does the parotid duct enter the oral cavity ?
By the permanent maxillary 2nd molar
What type of saliva does the sublingual gland produce ?
Mucusy saliva
Where are the minor salivary glands found ?
On the palate
