What are the functions of a mirror and what are some helpful hints to note about a mirror?
Functions:
* To provide indirect vision
* Plain or magnifying
* Retraction of soft tissues
Helpful hints:
* The head can be changed if it gets scratched.
* Can be disposable
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Contra-angled probe?
Functions:
* Examination (Pointed tip allows good tactile sensitivity)
* Allows the dection of:
1. Defective pits/fissures
2. Calculus
3. Deficient margins of restorations / crowns and bridges
4. Caries
Helpful hints:
* Various types and styles - make sure you ask for the right one.
* Working end style may vary
* Does not have measurement markings
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Williams Probe?
Functions:
* Measuring the depth of periodontal pockets or cavity preparations
* Markings are in millimetre increments
* Blunt-ended
Helpful hints:
* Blunt end minimises soft tissue trauma
* Can be single or double-ended
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Excavator?
Functions:
* Removal of caries and excess materials
* Edges are sharp
Helpful hints:
* Looks like a tiny spoon and can be double or single-ended
* Remaining caries can be removed with a slow handpiece
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Gingival Margin Trimmers (enamel margin trimmers)?
Functions:
* Removing unsupported enamel
* Refining cavity preparations
* Edges are sharp
* Mesial and Distal versions
Helpful hints:
* Mesial trimmer - the point of the edge is close to the handle (Mesial is most close)
* Distal trimmer - the point of the edge is furthest away (Distant)
* On the trays we don’t mind too much which way they are as long as they are in the correct position on the tray
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Amalgam Plugger (Hobsons)?
Functions:
* Condenses Amalgam into a cavity
* The working end is flat in order to apply pressure to the area
* Which plugger size you use depends on the size of your cavity
Helpful hints:
* Also known as a condenser
* There is another type called Mortonson-Clevedent
* Can be double or single-ended
* The ones in SDLE have a large end and a small end
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Flat Plastic?
Functions:
* Deliver materials to the cavity (not amalgam)
* Removes excess material
Helpful hints:
* Can be single or double-ended
* Can be made from stainless steel, Anodised Aluminium or Teflon-coated (Aluminium or Teflon won’t discolour or stick to Composite)
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Wards Carver?
Functions:
* Carves amalgam
* Shapes restorations
* Creates correct Anatomy and Occlusion
* Edges are sharp/rounded
Helpful hints:
* Slightly smaller and pointer than the Flat Plastic
* Various types of Carvers, which one you use depends on the shape and size of the restoration
* Often used proximally
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Hollenback 3½ Carver?
Functions:
* Carves amalgam
* Shapes restorations
* Creates correct anatomy and occlusion
* Edges are sharp
Helpful hints:
* Slightly smaller and pointier than the Wards Carver
* Various types of Carvers, which one you use depends on the shape and size of the restoration
* Often used proximally
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Cleoid Discoid Carver?
Functions:
* Carves amalgam
* Shapes restorations
* Creates correct anatomy and occlusion
* Edges are sharp
Helpful hints:
* Rounder than the other carvers
* Various types of carvers, which one you use depends on the shape and size of the restoration
* Often used occlusally
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Ball-ended Burnisher?
Functions:
* Finishing instrument
* Polishes amalgam
* Adapt filling material to the margins
* Edges are round
Helpful hints:
* Can be single or double sided
* Usually has one small and one large size
* Which size you use depends on the shape and size of the cavity
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Ladmore Burnisher?
Functions:
* Finishing instrument
* Polishes amalgam
* Adapt filling material to the margins
* Edges are round but not as defined as the ball-ended burnisher
Helpful hints:
* Can be single or double sided
* Usually has one small and one large size
* Which size you use depends on the shape and size of the cavity
* Sometimes known as a Graduated Plastic
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Mixing Spatula (Weston and broad-bladed)?
Functions:
* Used to mix dental materials
* It is never used in the mouth
* Can have long ends (broad-bladed) or one blunt end (Weston)
Helpful Hints:
* Can be single or double sided with varying degrees of flexibility
* Anodised aluminium available which will not stick to or discolour composite
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Thymozin probe?
Functions:
* Used to apply calcium hydroxide and other lining materials to a cavity base
* Can be used as a very small burnisher
* Can be used to mix material in small quantities
Helpful hints:
* Can be single or double sided
* The shank can be right angled or curved
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Tofflemire matrix retainer?
Functions:
* Holds a matrix band securely
* Assembled in different ways to accomodate working in different quadrants in the mouth
Helpful hints:
* There is another type of siqveland matrix bands
* Also available as disposable plastic (Omnimatrix)
* The retainer is autoclavable but the band is single use (goes in the sharps bin)
* Matrix bands are in the boxes on your pod
What is the anatomy of a matrix retainer?
.
What are the functions and helpful hints of college tweezers?
Functions:
* Placing small objects in the mouth
* Removing small objects from the mouth
Helpful hints:
* Locking and unlocked varieties. Instrument trays in SDLE tend to have unlocked College tweezers
* Locking tweezers prevent materials being dropped
* Working ends can be straight/curved/serrated or smooth
What are the functions and helpful hints of a Millers Articulating Forceps?
Functions:
* Keeps articulating paper secure whilst checking occlusion
Helpful hints:
* The articulating paper must be 5mm longer than the forceps when checking posterior restorations, otherwise the patient may bite down on the forceps

What does a Material Box 2 look like?
