Incorrect Air-powder Polishing technique
causes excess aerosol production; NEVER angle nozzle directed into gingival sulcus or periodontal pocket
Facial emphysemas
occur due to abnormal introduction of air into subcutaneous tissues or interstitial spaces, prevented by avoiding theuse of compressed air/ air-water around extraction sites, small areas open to subcutaneous tissues; can get extreme
Air-Powder polishing contraindicated:
pts w/physician-directed sodium-restricted diet; respiratory diseases and like; pt w/end-staged renal disease, Addision’s disease or Cushing’s disease; immunocompromised pts; pts taking potassium, anti-diuretics, or steroid-therapy; on root surfaces, soft and spongy gingiva, or restorative materials
