Density and volume Flashcards
what is density
a measure of the amount of matter that is contained per unit of volume
what is the most dense state
solid
what is the formula for density
mass/volume
how does gas have pressure?
it is dependent on the motion of gas particles. gas particles will strike the walls of a container and a net pressure of the gas will be produced at right angles to the wall
what 3 factors affect gas pressure
temperature
mass of gas
volume of container
how does temperature affect the gas temperature
as temperature increases so does the pressure. this is because it will cause the gas molecules to have a greater kinetic energy so that they can move faster. this increases the collisions between the molecules and the wall so that more force is exerted on the same area each second. so pressure is increased
what is absolute zero
the temperature where the average speed of gas particles falls and the volume shrinks to zero. it is -273 celsius
how do you go from Celsius to kelvin
add 273
how do you go from Kelvin to celsius
subtract 273
how does the volume of a container affect the pressure
as volume decreases pressure increases
why does lowering pressure increases the pressure
as it means that there will be more particles in the same area. this will increase the frequency of collisions between the gas particles and the walls of the container so pressure increases
what is gas pressure measured in
pascals
why does the temperature rise when gas is compressed
as work will need to be done on it to compress the gas
