Density and Gravity Flashcards
9-3 lesson
how to find density
d= mass in g / volume in mL
how to find sg
sg = weight of given substance / weight of equal volume of water
how to calculate volume by weight and sg
mL = g / sg
how to calculate weight by volume and sg
g = mL x sg
example: what is sg of an oil if 54.96mL of the oil weights 52.78
using sg equation
52.78/54.96 = 0.9603
example: what is the density of an acid that is 10mL if the acid weighs 18g
using d=m/v
18/10 = 1.8
example: what is the volume in mL of 492g of nitric acid with sg of 1.40
using mL = g / sg
492/1.40 = 351.43 mL
example: 50mL pycnometer is found to weigh 120g when empty, 171 g when filled with water and 160g when filled with unknown liquid what is the SG?
use weight of given substance / weight of equal volume of water.
- find the sg for both water and unknown liquid
w of water = 171-120=51g
w of unknown = 160-120=40g
sg=40/51 = 0.78
