Dengue Virus Flashcards
What types of cirus is dengue
It is a flavivirus!!!
How many infections of Dengue are there each year
390 million - about 1/4 are asymptomatic
How many people suffer from classical dengue fever each year
50-100 million cases
How long does acute dengue fever last
acute illness lasts only 3-7 days
However convalescent phase may be prolnged
How many cases of DHF are there are year
500,000
Mortality of up to 10% –> tratement puts a huge burden on the healthcare system
It is a leading cause of hospitalisation and deaths in many SEA and latin american countries of paediatric disaese
Describe the genome
11kb it is a +ve sense
What are teh viral proteases in dengue
3b and NS3
Host enzymes in the ER are also involved in cleaving i.e. furin
How does dengue enter the cell
Via receptor mediated endocytosis
What are the main target cells for dengue
Dendritic cells
macrophages
Where does it replicate
In the cytoplasm. ER membrane changes to form a replication web —> a membranous web
What is the incubation period of Dengue
4 days! –> viraemia at 5 days
For many the acute pahse ends after 5 days
Is haemorrhage immune mediated or viral mediated
SHock haemorrhage generally occurs after the virus is cleared from teh system –> suggesting it is a immunopatholigcal dissease resulting in vasoactive substances
How long is viraemia
2 to 12 days
When did the cuba epidemics occur
1977 - mild DEN1 epidemic, 44.5% popoulations infected but no deaths
1981 - DEn-2 epidemic –> 10,300 cases and 158 deated
What is the main target of Ab
The envelope protein
PreM protein
NS-1 specific antibodies
