What kind of virus is the virus of Dengue Fever?
A single stranded RNA virus that has 4 serotypes. It can be acquired 4 times.
How is the disease transmitted?
Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus.
How else can the disease be transmitted?
Between mother and child
Blood Transfusion
Organ Transplantation
What is the usual incubation period?
4 to 7 days but can vary from 3 to 14 days
How many forms of Dengue exist?
Asymptomatic and Symptomatic forms. which are further subdivided into Dengue with Hemorrhage and Dengue without Hemorrhage
What are the sx of Dengue Fever?
Fever, myalgia, retro-orbital HA, Joint and Bone pain, rash, anorexia, Nausea, vomiting
What are the sx of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever?
Sx as above plus mild to massive hemorrhage due to immune mediated vascular leak.
What are the sx of Dengue Shock Syndrome?
As above with shock
What disease strongly resembles Dengue?
Leptospirosis
What are the atypical manifestations of Dengue Fever?
Encephalitis
Encephalopathy
Liver Failure
Cardiomyopathy
What are the warning signs in Dengue?
Severe Abdominal Pain Persistent Vomiting Ascites/Effusions Mucosal Bleeding Lethargy or Restlessness Liver edge enlarged greater than 2 cm
What are the three phases of Dengue infection?
Febrile- defervescense suggests entering the critical phase
