Demography Flashcards
Population
The inhabitants of a particular area
Baby boom
Post World War II when families began to get larger than previous sizes
Population density
Population of region divided by regions area
Population distribution
Patterns of where populations live
Rule of 70
Divide 70 by populations growth rates to estimate when the population will double
Birth rate
Number of births per thousand people
Death rate
Number of deaths per thousand people
Natural increase rate
Birth rate minus death rate
Population growth rate
Natural increase rate plus net migration rate
Expanding population pyramid
Rapid population growth
large percent young
smaller percent as age goes up
Contracting population pyramid
Negative population growth
small percent young and old
large percent mid age
Stable population pyramid
Neutral population growth
somewhat equal percent for each age
as expected old ages are usually lower
Stages of population change
Stage one: high birth rate high death rate
Stage two: due to healthcare improvement’s death rate lowers
Stage three: the baby boom comes to an end causing the birth rate to lower
Stage four: the birth rate begins to level off with the death rate
