-the number of births per thousand per year
-DECLINE IN BIRTH RATES
-social, economic, cultural etc factors
-The total fertility rate is the average number of children women will have during their fertile years

-more women are becoming childless / having children later

-changes in women positions eg divorce, contraception and abortion

-decline in the mortality rate - better nutrition, improved housing

-life expectancy. in 1900 males were expected to live until 50. But in 2013 that can expect to live to 90.7
