Demographics Flashcards
One way demographics has shaped family structure is through migration
Britain has become more ethically diverse. Including cultures that value the beanpole family. (where multiple generations live in the same house)
Migration stats
Since 2001, there has been an average increase in migration of around 183,000 people per year
Migration has led to what type of family structure
The Beanpole family.
Criticism of migration
critics would argue that this argument is weak. Instead they would suggest that many immigrants adopt British norms and values, including the nuclear family structure. Instead it is argued that the ageing population has caused extended family structure as the older generation need to be taken care of.
Another way in which demographics has influenced family structure is through the infant mortality rate.
Due to improved hygine conditions and advances in medicine, babies are more likely to live past infancy
IMR stats
Has fallen from 142 per 1,000 birth to 4.3 per 1,000 births.
Women had more babies in order to compensate for their children that were dying. This resulted in larger families.
to now
As the IMR is falling parents no longer have a lot of children. This has resulted in the rise of the nuclear family. Consisting of two parents and one or two children.
Criticism of IMR
However, it can be argued that it is not the decreasing IMR that has resulted in smaller families. Instead it is the decreasing need for children to work and earn money for the family. As parents dont need extra income from their children, they do not have a need to have so many children.
