Synthetic opioid analgesic that acts on opioid receptor sites to produce analgesia, Scheduled narcotic

Indications
Analgesia for moderate to severe pain
Meperidine (Demerol)
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to narcotics, diarrhea caused by poisoning, patients taking MAOIs, during labor or delivery of a premature infant, undiagnosed abdominal pain or head injury

Adverse Reactions
Respiratory depression, sedation, apnea, circulatory depression, arrhythmias, shock, increased ICP

Drug Interactions
Do not give concurrent with MAOIs, exacerbates CNS depression

Adult Dosage
50 – 100 mg IM, SC or 25 – 50 mg slow IV

Pediatric Dosage
1 – 2 mg/kg/dose IV, IO, IM, SC

Onset
IM 10 – 45 minutes, IV immediate

Special Considerations
Naloxone should be readily available
