1
Q
Types of Vascular Dementia (3).
A
- Stroke-Related (Multi-Infarct/Single-Infarct).
- Subcortical (Small Vessel Disease).
- Mixed (Both VD and AD).
2
Q
Aetiology of Vascular Dementia.
A
Impaired blood flow to areas of the brain due to vascular damage.
3

A
- Stroke/TIA.
- AF, HTN, Hyperlipidaemia, DM.
- Smoking, Obesity, CHD.
- Family History.
4
Q
Clinical Features of Vascular Dementia.
A
Step-Wise Progression due to progressive infarcts over time.
5
Q
Investigations of Vascular Dementia (2).
A
- Diagnosis - Clinical.
2. Imaging : Evidence of Significant Small Vessel Disease (MRI).
6
Q
Diagnostic Criteria of Vascular Dementia (3).
A
NINDS-AIREN Criteria :
- Presence of Cognitive Decline that Interferes with Activities of Daily Living (not due to Secondary Effects of Cerebrovascular Events).
- Cerebrovascular Disease (Neurology/Brain Imaging).
- Explainable Relationship e.g. Onset within 3 Months of Stroke, Abrupt Deterioration in Cognitive Function, Fluctuating STEPWISE Progression.
7
Q
Management of Vascular Dementia.
A
- Treat Underlying Risk Factors.
- Cognitive Stimulation Programmes, Multisensory Stimulation, Music & Art Therapy, Animal-Assisted Therapy.
- Manage Challenging Behaviours.

A
Suspected Comorbid :
- Alzheimer’s Disease.
- Parkinson’s Disease.
- Dementia with Lewy bodies.
