A chronic/progressive syndrome involving impairment of multiple higher cortical functions e.g. memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension and language.

- Cerebrovascular Disease - Multi-Infarct.

- Huntington’s.
- CJD.
- Pick’s Disease (Atrophy of Frontal and Temporal Lobes).
- HIV.
Differentials of Dementia (8).
- Hypothyroidism, Addison’s.
- B12, Folate, Thiamine Deficiency.
- Syphilis.
- Brain Tumour.
- Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.
- Subdural Haematoma.
- Depression.
- Chronic Drug Use e.g. Alcohol, Barbiturates.
Delirium vs. Dementia (5).
Delirium :
- Impairment of Consciousness.
- Fluctuation of Symptoms (Worse at Night).
- Abnormal Perceptions e.g. Illusions and Hallucinations.
- Agitation and Fear.
- Delusions.
Depression vs. Dementia (6).
Depression :
- Short History and Rapid onset.
- Biological Symptoms e.g .Weight Loss, Sleep Disturbance.
- Worry Over Poor Memory.
- Reluctance to Take Tests.

- Blood Screen (Exclude Reversible Causes).
