Mild-moderate dementia: acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
Donepezil- neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Rivastigmine- GI side effects (reduced in transdermal formulation)
Galantamine- Steven Johnson syndrome
Moderate-severe dementia: memantine
Aggravation treated with benzo and antipsychotic
What are the side effects of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
As you are increasing acetylcholine so you will get a parasympathetic side effects these include:
Diarrhoea
Urinary continence
Muscle weakness
Bradycardia
Bronchospasms
Emesis-vomiting
Lacrimation
Salivation
Stop treatment, treat the dehydration before reinitiating, amend the dose if needed if side effects happen
