general term for the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities

Approaching residents
A
- do a self-reflection. How’s your emotional state?
- go slow & evaluate how they respond
- if they become aggressive, step out of the room and report to the supervisor

how to distract & redirect
A
- ask probing questions
- change the topic
- give them choices
- avoid unnecessary touches as they can trigger aggression

stop & assess
A
- stay calm & take time to evaluate the situation
- don’t rush in without a plan
- get help from others

when things aren’t working
A
- change your approach or walk away and discuss the issue with the supervisor
- be culturally sensitive
- explore ways u can provide culturally competent care

easing the stress during bath time
A
- maintain dignity
- minimize discomfort
- promote independence
- if the individual is getting anxious, stop and reevaluate to find alternatives
- know their social history (family, pets, hobbies, etc) as it can be used for distraction and reassurance
