Land- British refusal
John Adams demanded the British leave the Great Lakes and the British refused in 1785
Land- issue of state division
Weakened the Americans bargaining power in relation to trade as the industrial interests of New England wanted tariffs against British competition and southern states wanted free trade as they were exporters of agricultural products
Foreign policy- Spain and the Mississippi
The Mississippi was in control by the Spanish which gave them leverage over the Americans
Foreign policy- Spain and the natives
Spain opposed Westward expansion they forged links with natives and developed a buffer zone to protect their possessions

British stayed in Great Lake on the pretext that the Americans had not restored loyalist property or paid war debts
Politics- unity
Once independent the states attached less importance to unity and became absorbed in their own affairs
Politics- state level
Most decisions affecting the lives of Americans were made at state level not by congress
Politics- coercive power
Confederation government had no coercive power over the states
Economy-imports and exports 1784-1786
USA imported from Britain goods worth over 7.5m selling less than 1/3 of that in return
Economy-soldiers
The government was unable to pay at soldiers and in the winter of 1782 army officers met in the York pressed for payback and pensions
Economy- national debt in 1783 and foreign debt

Economy- congress and states relations
Congress stated that war debs should be laid back to British merchants and loyalist property returned but the states ignored this
