Deltas Flashcards
Define delta
Deltas are deposited landforms found at the mouth of a river where the river meets a body of water with a lower velocity than the river
Delays form under what conditions
When the rate of deposition exceeds the rate of erosion. ie when a river has a large amount of sediment
Another condition
Flocculation when freshwater mixes with sea water chemical reactions with the salt cause clay particles to coagulate, increasing weight and depositional rates.
Delta characteristics
As the sediment leaves the river mouth it tends to be deposited in three layers topset, forest and bottomset beds. As the water carries its sediment heavier particles are deposited first and lighter last and are carried further out
Arcutate delta
Has a curved outer edge
Sediments deposited over 1000s if years
Eg Nile
Birdfoot
Created when a river with a huge sediment load into a shallow, low energy waters
Sediment is deposited along channel sides and additional channels also extend and so the birds foot shape is created.
Eg Mississippi
