Absolutism
Things are right or wrong, regardless of context
Agape
A selfless unconditional love, associated with Christian ethics and principle of love in situation ethics
Antinomianism
A system without ethical rules, allowing any actions
Apparent good
A choice that seems good but doesn’t align with true moral good - according to natural law
Autonomy
The ability to make moral decisions independently, free from external control
Conscience
The internal sense of right and wrong, often viewed as influenced by reason, divine guidance, or social conditioning
Conscientia
Aquinas’ term for the application of moral knowledge to specific situations, forming moral judgments
Consequentialist
An ethical approach where the morality of an action is judged by its outcomes
Deontological
An ethical theory that focuses on duty and the inherent morality of actions rather than their consequences
Divine law
Moral law revealed by god, such as in scripture or religious teachings
Doctrine of double effect
A belief within natural law that states that an unintended bad result is acceptable if the intended result is good
Empirical
Based on observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic
Eternal law
The overarching moral order, reflecting gods wisdom and governing all creation
Eudaimonia
Universal flourishing
