Defintions 6,7 Flashcards
What is a macromineral
mineral required in the diet at relatively high levels
What is a micromineral
Minerals required in the diet at relatively low levels
What is hydroxyapatite
Main inorganic component of bone, ~70 of bone weight. Contains Ca, P, O and H
What is parturient paresis
Paralysis due to a sudden drop in blood Ca following onset of milk production; often called “milk fever”
Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
excessive bone resorption due to high levels of parathyroid hormone release associated with long term consumption of low Ca, high P diets
Pica
Deranged appetite caused by specific mineral deficiencies
Premix
mixture of ingredients designed to be mixed with other ingredients before use in a complete feed
Metalloenzyme
Enzyme that contains one or more metal atoms as an integral part of its structure
Goiter
Enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by an iodine deficiency
Indispensable (essential) aa
AA that cannot be synthesized by the animal and must be provided in sufficient quantities in the diet
Dispensable (non-essential) aa
AA that can be synthesized by the animal, not needed in diet
Conditionally indispensable aa
AA required under certain conditions in amounts greater than can be synthesized by the animal
Semi-indispensable aa
AA that can be synthesized by the animal but only from an indispensable precursor
Peptides
chains of aa joined by peptide bonds
Polypeptides
chains of large numbers of aa joined together by peptide bonds
