Feed intake regulation
Interrelated mechanisms that attempt to regulate energy intake in relation to energy expenditure
Hunger
The complex of sensations which compels an animal to obtain food
Satiety
The complex of sensations which compels an animal to stop eating
Palatability
The degree of readiness with which a particular feed is selected and eaten
Ventromedial nucleus
Part of the hypothalamus that influences the animal to stop eating. “Satiety Centre”
Lateral nucleus
Part of the hypothalamus that influences the animal to start eating. “Hunger Centre”
Anti-nutritional factor
Natural component of feedstuffs that interfere with the digestion, absorption or utilization of nutrients or energy
Toxin
harmful substance that is produced by living things
Poison
Any chemical that is harmful to health; can be inorganic or organic
Contaminants
Material inadvertently included in a feed; may or may not be poisonous
Mycotoxins
Toxins produced by molds that colonize crops
