Definitions2 Flashcards
Labour
- It is the process by which the fetus is delivered after the 24th week of gestation.
- It is the physiological process that results in the birth of a baby, delivery of the placenta, and the signal for lactation to begin
The onset of labour:
It is defined as the point when uterine contractions become regular and cervical effacement and dilatation becomes progressive.
1st stage of labour
It is the time from the diagnosis of labor to full dilatation of the cervix
Second stage of the labor
It is the time from full dilatation of the cervix to delivery of the fetus
Third stage of labor
It is the time from delivery of the fetus until complete delivery of the placenta
Cervical effacement:
It is a process by which the cervix shortens in length as it becomes incorporated into the lower segment of the uterus
Latent phase of 1st stage of labor
It is the time between the onset of regular painful contractions and 3-4cm cervical effacement
Active phase of 1st stage of labor
Time bt the end of latent phase and full cervical dilatation
Passive phase of 2nd stage of labor
The time between full dilatation and the onset of involuntary expulsive contractions
Precipitous labor
It is defined as expulsion of the fetus within less than 3 hors of the onset of regular contractions
When the labor is regarded as prolonged:
When it lasts longer than 12 hours in nulliparous women and 8 hours in multiparous women.
Preterm labor
PTL is the onset of labor before 37 weeks’ gestation and after the age of viability (24 weeks)
Or : it is delivery between 24 and 37 weeks
Pelvic organ prolapse
It is defined as Protrusion of uterus and/ or vagina beyond normal anatomical border.
Induction labor
Artificial initiation of labor
Fetal surveillance
assessment of in utero fetal well-being prior to the onset of labor and during labor
Fetal distress
It is an impairment in the oxygenation or nutritional state of the fetus revealed by clinical and investigation study.
Gestational D.M (GDM):
It is abnormal glucose tolerence test reconized for the first time during pregnancy may or may not resolve after pregnancy
Cesarean section
It is a surgical procedure by which fetus is delivered through abdomen and uterine incision.
Cesarean hystrectomy
It is a CS followed by removal of uterus.
In case of intractable bleeding like pl. Previa or acreta
AntePartum Hemorrhage
Genital tract bleeding after 24 weeks of pregnancy and before delivery of baby (3rd TM)
Placenta previa:
It is a placenta that has implanted into the lower segment of the uterus
Placental Abruption
Premature separation of a normally sited placenta
Vasa previa
It is a condition when fetal vessels traverse the fetal membranes over the internal cervical os
Eclampsia
It is defined as the occurrence of a tonic-clonic seizure in association with a diagnosis of pre eclampsia
Gestational trophoplastic disease
It is a specrum of disease caused by over growth of the placenta
Induction of labor
Artificial initiation of labor
Menopause
Permanent cessation of menstruation at the end of reproductive life due to loss of ovarian follicular activity
