Definition of abortion:
Termination of pregnancy before 24 weeks, or products of conception weghing below 500g
Fetal causes:
Chromosomal anomalies
Disease of fertilized ovum
Hypoxia
Maternal causes:
General: infection, ABO inc, Drugs, or disease like chronic nephritis
Local: uterine malformation, trauma, endocrine dysfunction, or implantation in LUS
Types of abortion:
Spontaneous: threatened or missed
Induced: therapeutic or criminal
When the fetus fies and is not expelled, but it is retained in utero for two months or longer
Missed abortion
One of the subdivisions of spontaneous abortion, it may go to term, or it may become inevitable
Threatened abortion
Persistent bleeding and cramps with dilatation of the cervix
Inevitable abortion
All the products of conception are expelled:
Complete abortion
Some parts of the products of conception have been expelled, while others (placental and memb) remain within the uterus:
Incomplete abortion
The pt has 3 or more successive, spontaneous abortion:
Habitual abortion
Incomplete abortion complicated by infection of the uterine cavity
Spetic abortion
Artificial legal termination of pregnancy due to medical indication:
Therapeutic abortion
**The illegal termination of pregnancy.
No medical or obstetrical indication
Criminal abortion
S&S of threatened abortion:
Cervical os is closed
Membranes are intact
Pain and backache may or may not be present
S&S of septic abortion
Signs of fevere:
Tender and painful uterus
Offensive vaginal bleeding
High temp
Rapid pulse
Chills
Unstable BP
Shock
