Bony prominence
Areas of body where bone is close to surface of skin (e.g. elbows, sacrum)
Dermatitis
Inflammation of skin
Dermis
Layer of skin under the epidermis. Contains hair and nail follicles, sweat and oil glands, blood vessels, nerves, and touch receptors
Eczema
Red, itchy areas on the surface of the skin
Epidermis
Outer layer of the skin. Contains melanin, nerve endings, but no blood vessels
Friction
When 2 surfaces rub together
Integumentary system
The skin. The largest organ and system in the body. Responsible for a natural protective covering of the body
Melanin
Found in epidermis. Gives skin its primary color
Pressure points
Points where the body bears much of its weight
Pressure ulcers
Pressure sores, decubitus ulcers, decubiti, bed sores
Serious wound caused by poor circulation, resulting from pressure
Shearing
When skin moves in one direction, and tissue underneath remains in same location
