Definitions H - Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Anemia
Low red blood cell count
Arteries
Blood vessels that carry blood with oxygen and nutrients away from heart (except pulmonary artery)
Atria (left and right)
Two upper chambers of the heart
Blood
Contains water (90%), blood cells, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nutrients, hormones, enzymes, and waste products
Cardiovascular system (circulatory system)
Responsible for continuous movement of blood through body
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
When one or both sides of the heart stop pumping effectively
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
Blood vessels in the coronary arteries narrow, lowering blood supply to heart and depriving it of oxygen
Diastole
Resting phase of heart beat. Heart refills with blood. Leads to bottom number of blood pressure reading
Heart
Pump of the cardiovascular system
Hypertension
High blood pressure
Myocardial Infarction (MI, heart attack)
Heart muscle does not receive adequate blood flow and lacks oxygen. Causes damage or death to area of heart
Pulse
Beat of the heart felt at an artery. Wave of blood passing through an artery. Number of heartbeats per minute
Systole
Working phase of heartbeat. Heart is pumping blood to body. Gives top number in blood pressure reading
Varicose veins
Enlarged, twisted veins, usually in legs
Veins
Blood vessels that carry blood containing waste products away from cells and toward the heart (except pulmonary vein)
