Definitions and order Flashcards
Intercostal muscles:
The muscles between the ribs that contract and relax during breathing, moving the ribcage.
Ribs:
The bones that form a protective cage around the lungs and heart.
Diaphragm:
A dome-shaped sheet of muscle at the base of the thorax that contracts and flattens during inhalation to increase the volume of the chest cavity.
Trachea:
The windpipe that allows air to pass from the mouth and nose into the bronchi. It is supported by rings of cartilage to keep it open.
Bronchi:
Two large tubes branching from the trachea, one leading to each lung.
Bronchioles:
Smaller tubes branching from the bronchi that carry air to the alveoli.
Alveoli:
Tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs.
Pleural membranes:
Thin membranes surrounding the lungs that create a sealed space, helping the lungs expand and reducing friction during breathing.
