Definitions Flashcards
Target Heart Rate
range ones HR should be in during aerobic exercise for maximum benefits
Muscular Endurance
ability of a muscle or group of muscles to sustain repeated contractions against a resistance for an extended period of time
Cardio Respiratory Endurance
ability of the heart to provide oxygen to the muscles during physical activity for a prolonged period of time
Flexibility
ability of your joints to move through a full range of motion, allows for more movement around the joints, and keeps your body protected from injury
Muscular Strength
ability of your body’s muscle to generate force in a short period of time
Core Strength
improving muscles formed around the trunk area of the body involving larger muscle groups such as the abdominal, oblique, and lower back muscles
ex. plank, crunches, superman
Anaerobic Exercise
exercise in which oxygen is used up more quickly than the body is able to replenish inside the working muscle
ex. bodybuilding: exercise that builds muscles through tension, sprints
Body Composition
refers to the proportion of fat and fat-free mass in the body, a lower proportion of body fat leads to a healthy body
Power
ability, regarded as put forth or exerted; strength, force, or energy in action
Coordination
the organization of the different elements of a complex body or activity so as to enable them to work together effectively
ex. juggling, dribbling a soccer ball/basketball, hand-eye coordination
Speed
full, maximum, or optimum rate of motion
Agility
ability to move and change direction and position of the body quickly and effectively while under control
ex. shuttle run, speed ladder, and cone drills for athletes
Balance
an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady
Reaction Time
amount of time it takes to respond to stimulus
Static Stretch
stretching a muscle or group of muscles to its farthest point and maintaining or holding that position; recommended hold time: 30 seconds
