Definitions Flashcards
ARC BURN
A localized condition or deposit that is caused by an electric arc and consists of remelted metal, heat-affected metal, a change in the surface profile, or a combination thereof.
WRINKLE BEND
Pipe bend produced by a field machine or controlled process that may result in prominent contour discontinuities on the inner radius. The wrinkle is deliberately introduced as a means of shortening the inside meridian of the bend
YEILD STRENGTH
The stress at which a material exhibits the specified limiting offset or specified total elongation under load in a tensile test as prescribe by the specification or standard
WATER CROSSING
The crossing by an onshore pipeline of a bay, lake, river,or major stream
TOLERANCE ZONE
The space in which a line or facility is located and in which special care is to be taken
TRACEABILITY
Ability to trace the history, application or location of an object (regarding a product or service, can relate to the origin of material and parts, processing history, distribution and location after delivery)
STATIONING
A measure of length used to identify locations along the pipeline which provides a geospatial reference for pipeline features and construction. Stationing is typically measured in feet, usually indicated as X+XX. Generally, the beginning of the pipeline route is designated as zero and station values increase along the route. Some operators use mile posts as a method of stationing
ROW
Strip of land on which utilities and similar facilities are constructed in which a pipeline company and landowner both have a legal interest
ROOT BEAD
First or stringer bead that initially joins two sections of pipe, a section of pipe to a fitting or two fittings
SEAM
The longitudinal or spiral weld in fabricated line pipe.
PITTING
Localized corrosion of a metal surface that is confined to a small area and takes the form of cavities called pits.
POLARIZATION
The change from the open-circuit potential as a result of current across the electrode/electrolyte interface
MITER
Two or more straight sections of pipe matched and joined on a line bisecting the angle of junction so as to produce a change in direction
NEAR MISS
An event where damage did not occur, but a clear potential for damage was identified
NOBLE
The positive direction of electrode potential, thus resembling noble metals such as gold and platinum
