Bicameral
Having two Houses of Parliament. The House of Representatives and Senate
Parliament
The place where the government is centred
Referendum
A vote of the Australian electors on a proposed change to the constitution
Preamble
The introductory part of a statue or deed stating it’s purpose, aims or justification
Constitution
The written document that contains the principles and laws that describe the powers and duties of the government
A double majority
Total yes vote needs to be 50% and 1
There as to be a majority yes vote in 4 of the 6 states
Mace
A staff that lies on the table in the house of reps
The black rod
A ceremonial object that the usher of the black rod carries
House of review
Senate acts as a house of review for any proposed laws. They give a second opinion and make changes after it has passes through the house of reps.
Constitutional Monarchy
A government headed by a monarch with powers limited by the constitution
Local government
Responsible for local issues such as footpaths, rubbish collection, swimming pools, ovals, parks, library’s, minor roads
Judiciary
Responsible for interpreting laws and deciding how they are applied
Executive
Responsible for enforcing laws
Democracy
Form of government in which the people take part in governing
House of Representatives
The elected lower house of Australia
Also called the peoples house
