Definitions Flashcards
What’s an atom
The smallest particle of an element
What’s a mixture
Two or more substances mixed together without bonding. Components can be in any proportions
What’s a compound
Two or more elements in fixed proportions joined by strong bonds
What’s the atomic number
Number of protons in an atom
What’s a mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
What’s an isotope
Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
What’s the relative atomic mass
The weighted average of mass of the isotopes of the element, measured on a scale on which a carbon-12 atom has a mass of exactly 12 units
What’s a covalent bond
The attraction between shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of two atoms
What’s an ionic bond
The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
What’s an element
Substance that cannot be split up into anything more simple by chemical means. Consist of one type of atom only
What’s a giant structures
Solids in which bonding extends throughout the material
What are ions
Particles with either positive or negative charge (lost or gained electrons)
What are molecules
Separate particles with no charge, with covalent bonds holding together the atoms with them but weak forces between the molecules
