Definitions Flashcards
What is displacement?
Displaces water so hulls settles down in water (DIW)
What is semi displacement?
Combination of planing and displacement
What is beam?
Widest part of the hull
What is height?
Distance between center of gravity & metacenter
What is fixed height?
The height of boat (measured from radar not mast)
What is length?
Bow to stern
What is freeboard?
Distance from weather deck to waterline on vessel
What is draft?
Depth of waterline to keel
What’s the measurement used to define boat displacement?
Tons (gross tons)
What is planing?
Displaces, skins along water surface of water
What are the two primary forces that affect a boats stability?
1) gravity
2) buoyancy
What is center of gravity?
A point from which the weight of a body may be considered to act. (When weight is added gravity goes toward the added weight, when weight is removed it goes opposite.)
What is buoyancy?
The weight of the water pushing on the boat causing it to float. ( upward force of water displaced by hull)
What is equilibrium?
When boats at rest. Rolling–side to side,
Heeling–back & forth, listing–gravity not in the cent of boat until equilibrium/buoyancy is in the center.
What are the two types of stability?
Longitudinal (heeling)
Transverse (rolling)
Describe the two types of forces that affect stability?
Static: caused by placement of weight in the hull
Dynamic: caused by actions outside the hull such as wind a waves
Define double braid
Made of two hollow braid ropes one inside the other
Define plain laid
Made up of 3 strands mostly right laid
Define polypropylene line
Synthetic fibers w/ half strength as nylon 25% lighter & floats
Define nylon, including double braid
Synthetic: has great strength, elasticity, resistance to weather, slippery, elastic, used for towing lines
Define natural fiber
Organic material, plant fiber, used for tying fenders, secure chafing gear, & other parts where strength isn’t a major concern.
What is a bitter end?
Running end or free end of a line normally the part not worked with
What’s a standing part?
Remaining part of line part of the line not worked with
What’s a bowline?
A temporary eye in a line
What are the 5 parts of an anchor?
- stock
- fluke
- shank
- crown
How do you identify a boat is moving backwards?
3 short blast
Identify short blast
About 1 sec
Identify prolong blast
Leaving the pier 4-6 sec
Identify danger signal
5 blast or more
Identify signal for intention or coming to port (inland)
2 short blast
Identify whistle signal for sailing vessels in reduced visibility
1 prolonged 2 short every 2 min
Recognize & report overtaking situations
1right 2 left
