Definitions Flashcards
Ballottrment
Rebounding of fetus against examiners fingers on palpation
Chadwick’s sign
Violet colour of mucous membranes of cervix, vagina and vulva
Occurs about 4 wks of pregnancy
Caused by increased vascularity
Probable sign of pregnancy
Embryo
Stage of fetal development
Lasts from day 15 until ~ 8 wks after conception or embryo measures 3cm crown-rump
Fertilization
Uniting of sperm and ovum
Occurs w/in 12 hrs of ovulation and 2-3 days of insemination
Goodell’s sign
Softening of cervix
Begins at second month of pregnancy
Probable sign of pregnancy
1) Gravida
2) Gravidity
3) Nulligravida
4) primigravida
5) multigravida
1) Pregnant women
2) Number of pregnancies
Eg. Gravida 1= first pregnancy
Gravida 2= second pregnancy
3) Women never pregnant
4) pregnant for the first time
5) pregnant more than 1 (at least 2 pregnancy)
Hegar’s sign
Compressibility/softening of lower uterine segment
Occurs ~ 6wks gestation
Probable sign of pregnancy
Implantation
Embedding of fertilized ovum in uterine mucosa 6-10 days after conception
Infant
28 days - first birthday
Lecithin - sphingomyelin
Used for predicting fetal lung maturity
Normal L/S ratio in amniotic fluid is 2:1>
Lochia
Discharge from uterus
Consists of blood from vessels of placenta and debris from decidua
Lasts 2-6 wks after delivery
Nageles rule
Determines estimated due date based on women’s 28 day menstrual cycle
Subtract 3 mths
Add 7 days to first day of last period
Add 1 year
Newborn/neonate
Birth - 28 days
1) Parity
2) Nullipara
3) Primipara
4) Multipara
1) # of births carries past 20 wks, whether or not fetus was born alive
2) women who has not had a birth at more than 20 wks
3) women who has had 1 birth after the 20 wk of gestation
4) women who has had 2 or more pregnancies to the stage of viability
Placenta
Organ
Provides nutrient exchange and waste products btwn baby and mom
Produces hormones to maintain pregnancy
Develops by 3 mth of gestation aka= after birth
Starts to form at implantation/structures complete by week 12
Wks 10-12 genetic testing can be done via chorionic villus sampling
Third trimester/ transfer of maternal immunoglobulin provides passive immunity to baby for first few months after birth
Large particles eg. Bacteria can’t pass through placenta BUT nutrients, alcohol, drugs, antibodies and viruses can
Quickening
Occurs 16-20 wk of pregnancy
Mom can feel baby move for the first time
Surfactant
Phospholipid
Keeps baby’s alveoli from collapsing
Amount sufficient after 32 wks gestation
Uterus
Organ
Located behind symphysis pubis, btwn bladder/rectum
Has four parts- fundus (upper part), corpus (body), isthmus (lower segment), cervix
Amniotic Fluid
Pale, straw like coloured fluid
Serves as a cushion for baby
Maintains body temperature of baby
Baby modifies fluid via swallowing, peeing, and movement through respiratory tract
800-1200ml by end of pregnancy
Is a measure of fetal kidney function
Amnion
Inside
Encloses amniotic cavity
Inner membrane/forms ~2wk of embryonic development
Forms fluid-filled sac/surrounds embryo and later the fetus
Chorion
Outside/placenta
Outer membrane enclosing amniotic cavity
Becomes vasularized/forms fetal part of placenta
