Definitions Flashcards
Lymph Nodes
Bean shaped structure
Filters foreign pathogens by trapping them in fibres
MHC
Major Histocompatibility Complex
Has both self and non-self antigens on it
Expressed on surface of cells
Leukocytes
General term for white blood cells
Lymphocytes
WBC produced by Primary lymphoid tissue and exist in blood and lymph
What do all the cells in the 2nd line of defense respond to and how?
ANTIGENS by membrane receptors
Phagocytes
Engulf and digest foreign material, damaged cells and debris
Chemically attracted to damaged region/infection site
Have receptors on their surface
Macrophage
Phgocytic Lymphocyte that is non-specific and is the cell that gobbles and presents T cells with an antigen
Eosiniphils
Their enzymes make holes in pathogens
Basophils and Mast Cells
Produce histamines which make blood vessels dialiate and permeate, allowing other cells to reach infected tissue (causes swelling)
Cytotoxic
Kill cells by releasing cytoplasmic proteins to induce apoptosis (apoptosis = normal death)
NK cells
Natural killer cells
Mature in bone marrow (not B or T cell though)
Cytotoxic - kills cells by relasing cytoplasmic proteins that induce apoptosis
Initiated by interferons
Interferon
A natural protein produced in response to viral entry that has the ability to disable viral replication
