1. Microbes and Pathogens (Pathogen type definitions) Flashcards
Pathogen Definition
A bacterium, virus or other microorganism that can cause disease.
Microbe Definition
A microorganism, especially a bacterium, that causes disease or fermentation.
5 Pathogen groups
Bacteria, Fungi, Protists, Viruses, Prions and Multicellular Parasites
Bacterium Definiton
Unicellular microorganism, has cell walls, lacks organelles, organized nucleus, can cause disease.
Fungi Definition
Organism feeding on organic matter, unicellular or multicellular.
Protist definition
Phylum, single-celled microscopic animals, amoebas, flagellates, ciliates, sporozoans. Belonging to the kingdom Protista.
Virus Defition
Infective agent, consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host.
Prion definition (protein)
Nitrogenous organic compound, large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids, structural components of body tissues such as muscle, hair, etc., and as enzymes and antibodies.
Parasite definition
An organism which lives in or on another organism, getting its nutrients from that host.
Antibiotic definition
A medicine that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms
