Definitions 3 Flashcards
Normal distribution
A naturally occurring frequency distribution where many of the values cluster around the mean, and where there are few high and low values away from the mean
Cluster sampling
Where respondents are chosen for interview in a few locations, to reduce the cost of research, rather than being spread evenly across the population
Population
The total number of consumers within a given group
Quota sampling
Where respondents are selected for interview in a non-random manner in the same proportion as they exist in the whole population
Random sampling
Where respondents are selected for interview without method
Representative sampling
A sample which has the same characteristics as the population
Sampling bias
Where the sample chosen is not representative of the population
Sample size
The number of people chosen for the sample from the whole population
Snowballing
A non-random method of market research where a small number of selected respondents are asked to nominate further potential respondents for interview and so on.
Standard deviation
A measure of the average difference of each result from the mean
